It was one of the first sports to be played in the first Paralympic Winter Games in 1976 Örnsköldsvik. Competitors are divided into three categories, competing in a ski chair called” sit” disabled, standing and athletes with a visual impairment that are preceded by a guide. All skiers compete using the correction factor. The disciplines in which they compete are:
· Medium distance: 10 km men / 5 km women SIT, ST, VI
· Long distance: 15 km men / 12 km women SIT, ST, VI
· Long distance: 20 km men / 15 km women SIT, ST, VI
· Sprint SIT, ST, VI
· Relay: 4 x 2,5 km men / 3 x 2,5 km women
Nordic skiing is governed by the International Paralympic Committee and its rules are an adaptation of the rules of the International Ski Federation (FIS).
